RITES of PASSAGE AUTUMN SCHOOL in CUMBRIA
FRIDAY 2nd - MONDAY 5th NOVEMBER 2018 at the MALT KILN, BARDSEA near ULVERSTON.
Led by Sue Gill and Gilly Adams. This workshop has 12 places only.
For artists, teachers, community arts workers, story tellers and anyone with a creative interest in acquiring the skills to make ritual and ceremony in their own lives.
This is a unique opportunity to work with Sue and Gilly who have been leading these special workshops together for more than twenty years. Of their last workshop in Frome in March 2018 a participant wrote:
It was one of the best trainings I have done with a great balance of teaching and direct experience that kept me active, immersed and reflective throughout. Laughter, tears, community, landscape, sacredness and plenty of profanity - marvellous. I will carry the experience with me for a very long time.
Michael Harvey, Storyteller - participant
We will look at the work of the independent celebrant and the theory of Rites of Passage. We offer an invitation to reflect on ceremony in our own lives, with particular reference to what is missing and why. We will collaborate on ways to devise and create new ceremonies, both indoors and in landscape, using symbolism and the elements, myth and storytelling. We share the process and practice of ceremony and ritual in depth and hands on, in a supportive and safe environment. We share information on professional networks, practice and resources.
Bring along your questions – there will be a wealth of experience in the room.
Come along and collaborate on ways to devise new ceremonies for the lives we lead today. We need to be alive and awake to our ever evolving cultural references regarding symbolism in ritual and ceremony. For example what does the colour orange bring to mind should we plan to use it in ceremonial dress? The garments of Buddhist and Hindu monks in SE Asia? or is orange now ALSO the colour of oppression and punishment as in Guantanamo Bay jumpsuits? Whilst we are comfortable with the ruby ring for a 40th anniversary, what about rituals around our car keys? or about choosing to have a tattoo? Memory, our instincts, the body and its 5 senses, laughter, sadness, darkness and light all have to be considered.
The Rites of Passage Autumn School will bring a provocative nudge to propel us through unexpected thresholds.
We have held the fee for the Autumn School the same as the previous Rites of Passage School in March 2018: £395.
To secure a place one of the 12 available places we ask for a non refundable deposit of £75. The balance can be paid in instalments.
