Foxy’s Song Book is a manual for individuals and groups to sing from. It contains 51 songs with lyrics by John Fox and his drawings, mainly light-hearted. Designed for the piano with clear and simple arrangements for every song, a few for choirs.
The book features over 50 melodies and scores by eight gifted composers
Tim Fleming, Dan Fox, Guy Hamilton, Peadar Long,
Luc Mishalle, Pete Moser, Greg Stephens, Mike Westbrook.
Pop, lullaby, anthem, carols, comic and folk ballads,
music hall, nursery rhymes, secular prayers and rants.
Songs here have been selected from countless events for their energy, commitment, beauty, occasional irreverence and some tranquillity which ensures they can stand alone, away from their original context.
John Fox MBE was, with Sue Gill, Roger Coleman and others, the founder and then Artistic Director of Welfare State International (WSI) 1968-2006, the legendary and influential gang of wild artists and performers who re-invented fire sculptures, site-specific theatre in landscape, rites of passage and participatory events around the world.
WSI’s events included setting fire to the Houses of Parliament in Catford, ‘Raising the Titanic’ in Limehouse, flying Queen Victoria’s bloomers over Barrow in Furness Town Hall, levitating Pinocchio in Vancouver and initiating scores of Lantern Parades in communities.
In 2006 Fox and Gill started Dead Good Guides seeking a role for art that weaves it more fully into the fabric of our lives. Their current project ‘Wildernest’ is a devotional garden at Baycliff, on the west shore of Morecambe Bay, which unites the everyday with the larger rhythms of nature, the tides and the seasons. A seeding ground for more songs and poems!
